The Second Grade coordinated a school-wide drive collecting “Notes of Cheer” for Philabudance. According to their website, “Philabundance was created in 1984 with the simple belief that no man, woman or child should go hungry. Our growth and eventual integration with the Philadelphia Food Bank in 2005 has made us the region’s largest hunger relief organization.” Students in the Early Childhood Division, Lower School, and Upper School at St. Peter’s made lovely letters and cards for Philabundance to include in their delivery of food packages. These beautiful, caring, and creative messages are sure to put smiles on the faces of the people who receive them.

To further support the important work that Philabundance does, the Second Grade held a snack sale fundraiser that raised a total of $268.32. Thank you to everybody who made a treat for our sale as well as to everyone who purchased an item in support of our fundraiser. A special thank you goes out to our friends at Sweet Freedom Bakery who very generously donated delicious allergen-free cookies!

We bid farewell to our wonderful Guatemalan exchange student, Eugenia Giron, this month. Eugenia came to St. Peter’s for eight weeks as part of an intercultural exchange program and she stayed with the Lecuona - Gahunia family. First Grader Galvan Gahunia was delighted to have a big sister for a few weeks. Eugenia turned 14 years old while here (with great fanfare) and was an outstanding addition to our Seventh Grade. Before she came to our school, Eugenia wrote, “I know that this will be a really nice and beautiful experience. I also know I won’t forget this ever!” At the end of the program, we know that her experience here was “beautiful” and all who got to know her felt better for it!

Eugenia excelled in her classes here, scoring high marks on assignments and tests. She enjoyed our full program and even played on our soccer team, scoring a few goals during the season! Eugenia presented a speech and slide show about her home country at Lower and Upper School assemblies. Everyone acknowledged her poise and maturity as a presenter. Eugenia is completing her “summer break” and will return to classes at her school in Guatemala. Many of us look forward to staying in touch with this kind, warm, smart, and giving young lady. Eugenia will always have friends and a home here at St. Peter’s School, and we hope that she will return to visit! She has been a wonderful ambassador of her country. We send her back to Guatemala with the hope that she will spread the warmth and good will of the St. Peter’s School community with her family and friends.

(Eugenia is pictured presenting her speech about Guatemala).

Second Grade Skype Conversation

To “travel” the United States, and compare and contrast urban, suburban, and rural living, the Second Grade had a Skype conversation with a First and Second Grade class in a school just outside of Burlington, Vermont. This class is taught by Mrs. Jessica Keilty Eaton, who many of us remember as a teacher at St. Peter’s School! The children asked each other thoughtful questions about their classes, schools, neighborhoods, and towns. St. Peter’s students thought it was exciting that Mrs. Eaton’s class frequently experienced feet of snow falling along with bear, bobcat, and snake sightings. The children in Vermont enjoyed hearing about Philadelphia’s cultural institutions including the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Academy of Natural Sciences and well-known Philadelphia foods such as cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and water ice. This conversation taught the boys and girls that while there might be a number of differences in our communities, many aspects of our lives are very similar. We all had fun using technology to talk to new friends!

On Tuesday, November 1st the Lower School was pleased to welcome author Eli Kowalski and his beautiful silky-haired Maltese dog Kushka. Mr. Kowalski is the author of Kushka: The Dog Named Cat, a non-fiction picture book about his beloved pet. This is a story about a dog, whose name means cat! Have you ever heard anything as silly as that? At our interactive assembly, Mr. Kowalski read from Kushka: The Dog Named Cat and then Kushka performed some incredible tricks! Students asked questions about writing books from this very special guest and published author! In addition to writing stories about Kushka, Mr. Kowalski has written many books about Philadelphia sports teams and has a children’s book about the Philly Phanatic. Additionally he has created many Philadelphia-themed projects and developed video and board games.

Monica Herrera came with a small group to demonstrate and discuss Flamenco dancing in a recent assembly. According to her website, Ms. Herrera was born in Philadelphia to Cuban parents who migrated to the US in 1961. Her dance training began at an early age in classical ballet, tap and jazz. During her first trip to Spain at the age of 12, she became interested in Flamenco and began her training here in Philadelphia. She went on to become a company member and soloist with Flamenco Ole dance company. She later co-founded the Philadelphia- based Flamenco troupe Pasión y Arte. Monica has been a cover dancer for Franco Zeffirelli’s production of “Carmen” at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York for the 2004, 2005 and 2008 season. She participates in Arts in Education Programs with Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo conducting lecture-demonstrations and residency programs throughout the tri-state area. Together with Cristian Puig, Monica co-founded De Luna a Lunares Flamenco ensemble.

Monica teaches Flamenco dance at 954 Dance Movement Collective in Philadelphia and performs regularly at various tablaos in New York and New Jersey. She conducts many school residencies, performances and master classes in the tri-state area. Our audience was transfixed by Ms. Herrera’s dancing along with her dance partner. Equally magnificent was the music played by Mr. Cristian Puig.

Please see the following for more information and to sign up for classes:
