Building for the Future of St. Peter’s School

St. Peter’s School is beginning an exciting and important process to enhance our facilities so they can continue to serve our students, faculty, and community for generations to come. This page will serve as a central hub for information, updates, and opportunities to engage as the planning and design process unfolds. We invite families, alumni, neighbors, and friends of SPS to return to this page often as we share progress and next steps.

Our Community-Informed Vision

The School’s Board of Trustees and Administration are working closely with our architect, owner’s representative, and broader SPS community to imagine a facility that supports teaching and learning today while positioning the School to thrive for the next fifty years.

Community input is a vital part of this process. Families, faculty, alumni, and neighbors will continue to have opportunities to learn more, ask questions, and share ideas as plans evolve.

Why a New Building

St. Peter’s School has a long history of thoughtful stewardship of its campus and facilities. After extensive study, reflection, and exploration of options, the School determined that this is the right moment to invest in a new building on our own property to better align our physical spaces with our educational program and community needs.

The proposed project is designed to expand and improve SPS facilities in ways that support students academically, creatively, physically, and socially, while also addressing long-term priorities around safety, accessibility, sustainability, and infrastructure.

Key elements under consideration include:

  • A multi-purpose space and gymnasium

  • Dedicated classrooms for Art and Music

  • Outdoor recreation areas designed for all ages and usable in all four seasons

  • Significant improvements to safety, accessibility, and sustainability

  • Modernized HVAC and building systems

Design and Planning Process

Working with architects from AOS, the School is in an early design and planning phase. This includes exploring options for new construction as well as thoughtful renovation of existing interior spaces to maximize flexibility and functionality. All of our current designs and floor plans are preliminary. The purpose of this phase is to gather feedback, test ideas, and creatively reimagine how our spaces can best support students and programs. As plans develop, the School will continue to share updates and invite community input.

Planning also includes careful consideration of how construction would be managed to prioritize student safety and minimize disruption to daily school life.

What’s Next?

The months ahead will focus on continued planning, design development, and community engagement, as well as required review and approval processes. Throughout this time, SPS will offer opportunities for families and neighbors to connect with members of the project team, learn more about proposed plans, and share questions or feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • For the past decade, as our fifty-year agreement at OPCC neared, SPS explored the following possibilities:

    • Acquiring Old Pine Community Center – Old Pine Church has not been willing to sell.

    • Another long-term lease at OPCC – Paying market rent at OPCC results in increased operating costs and does not solve our problem for long-term stability.

    • Partnership with St. Peter’s Church – SPS was invited to explore the feasibility of a building project with St. Peter’s Church in 2023 to construct a building on the blacktop, which is owned by St. Peter’s Church. Due to financial and operational limitations at the Church, that project was terminated in early 2025.

    • Constructing on the Blacktop – We are unable to construct on the blacktop without a partnership with St. Peter’s Church, as the Church owns the blacktop. The Church is currently unwilling to sell.

  • We will provide plenty of notice prior to breaking ground. At the absolute earliest, we would break ground in June 2027 — contingent upon many things — and our community will be updated each step of the way.

  • We expect the project to be completed in 14-15months. Starting at the beginning of one summer and finishing at the end of the following summer would minimize disruption to our students over one school year.

  • No. We will lose access to Wiggins Field during the project, but we plan to use the blacktop area and Old Pine Community Center.

  • We’ve used Three Bears, Starr Garden, and other spaces in the past, and once we know our construction schedule, we can use those spaces more intentionally by accounting for travel time and safety-related logistics.
